Uitreiking gemeentelijke Sportstimuleringsprijs en Sportpenningen 2003
Sportstimuleringsprijs 2003 voor Earl Blijd

De gemeentelijke Sportstimuleringsprijs gaat dit jaar naar Earl Blijd. Sportwethouder Rene Paas heeft de prijs donderdagavond op het Stadhuis aan de winnaar uitgereikt. De prijs bestaat uit een geldbedrag van 1250 euro en een bronzen beeld van beeldhouwer Jan Steen.

Earl Blijd is al jaren een gevestigde naam in de Groninger sportwereld. Hij beoefent de Chinese gevechtskunst en -sport Kung Fu / Wushu en is oprichter van Bao Trieu, een vereniging voor Kung Fu / Wushu.
Earl Blijd is 43 jaar en afkomstig uit Curacao. Hij was veelvuldig Nederlands kampioen Kung Fu / Wushu, meervoudig Europees kampioen en ook wereldkampioen. Met zijn Bao Trieu demoteam heeft hij over de hele wereld opgetreden en veel prijzen gewonnen. Blijd was trainer van veel kampioenen en bondscoach van Duitsland en Nederland.
In 1995 kreeg Earl Blijd een ernstig auto-ongeluk. Hierbij raakte hij zwaar gewond, lag zeven dagen in coma en onderging twee zware operaties. Hij revalideerde in Beatrixoord en was daar een voorbeel dvoor zijn medepatienten. Daarna heeft hij zich gericht op lesgeven. Ondanks de restverschijnselen van zwaar hersenletsel weet hij jong en oud te motiveren om te sporten. Beatrixoord stuurt nu patienten naar Blijd om te sporten en revalideren. Kinderen met (geestelijke) beperkinge krijgen aparte trainingen van hem.
Met zijn vereniging Bao Trieu bereikt hij mensen uit alle lagen van de bevolking en uit diverse etnische groepen. Earl levert daarmee een grote positieve bijdrage aan de multiculturele samenleving en is een rolmodel voor veel jongeren.

Presentation of the municipal Sports Stimulation Award and the Sportsmedals 2003
Sports Stimulation Award to Earl Blijd

This year, the municipal Sports Stimulation Award went to Earl Blijd. Thursday evening in the City Hall, alderman of sports Rene Paas handed the award to the winner. The award consists of an amount of 1250 euro and a bronze sculpture of sculptor Jan Steen.

Since many years, Earl Blijd established his name in the world of sports in Groningen. He practices the Chinese martial art / sport Kung Fu / Wushu, and is founder of Bao Trieu, a society for Kung Fu / Wushu.
Earl Blijd is 43 years old, and was born in Curacao. He has been national champion Kung Fu / Wushu many times, won multiple European championships and was world champion as well. With his Bao Trieu demo team he performed all over the world, and won many prizes. Blijd was trainer of many champions and national coach of Germany and the Netherlands.
In 1995, Earl Blijd had a severe car accident. He was injured heavily, was in a coma for seven days and underwent two major surgeries. His rehabilitation took place in Beatrixoord, where he was an example to his fellow patients. Afterwards he directed himself to teaching. In spite of remnant symptoms of heavy brain injury, he manages to motivate both young and old to sport. Beatrixoord now sends patients to Blijd to sport and rehabilitate. Children with (mental) limitations receive a separate training.
With his society Bao Trieu he reaches people from all layers of the population and from several ethnic groups. Earl pays a large positive contribution to the multicultural society and is a role model for many young people.
